Will Graham left the bureau after a near-fatal entanglement with Dr Hannibal Lecter, crazed psychiatrist and serial killing cannibal, upon whom Graham now calls for advice. His crimes force FBI chief Jack Crawford to pull his best criminologist out of retirement.

Obsessed by the English Romantic William Blake’s painting “The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun”, Francis Dolarhyde is filled with a desire to change into something more than himself. The Tooth Fairy, so dubbed for his habit of breaking into his victims’ homes at night and biting them, has murdered two families in the Southern US cities of Birmingham and Atlanta.

Red Dragon was his first novel to feature Hannibal Lecter, although the story’s really about another fiend. He’s only written six novels in his long life, of which two thirds are worth reading and the latter third is junk with flashes of brilliance.

Creator of one of literature’s most distinctive monsters, Dr Hannibal Lecter, his style is an eccentric mix of outré modern horror and baroque aestheticism, the soul of Dante in the pen of a guy who writes crime thrillers. I like to think of Thomas Harris as the mad genius of crime and horror fiction.
